What Is Somatic Breathwork?

Somatic breathwork is a guided breathing practice that works directly with your nervous system. This holistic practice is rooted in the understanding that stress, trauma, anxiety, and suppressed emotions often are stored in the body.

Instead of trying to think your way out of stress, somatic breathwork uses intentional breathing patterns to help your body shift out of survival mode and into regulation. Because breath is one of the only systems in the body that is both automatic and voluntary, it gives you direct access to your autonomic nervous system (the system that controls stress responses like fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.)

In a somatic breathwork session, you’re guided through specific breathing rhythms that gently activate and then regulate the nervous system. This can help:

  • Release stored tension and stress patterns held in the body

  • Bring your body into rest and digest, allowing you to feel peace and calm

  • Improve emotional processing and resilience

  • Reduce anxiety and chronic stress symptoms

  • Build a greater sense of internal safety and self-trust

Research on somatic breathwork shows measurable impacts on stress hormones, heart rate variability, emotional regulation, and anxiety levels. In other words: you are releasing stress from the body and training your nervous system to respond to stress differently in the future.

Even after just one breathwork session, you may notice improvements across mind, body, and spirit.

Your first breathwork session: What to expect

Pre-Session Check-In

During the intro, Paige describes the breathing technique and format, reviews what to expect, and helps you set clear intentions for your breathwork journey.

Guided Breathwork Journey (50-60 min)

Paige guides you through a two-part breathing journey to help you release stored tension, access emotions and buried insights, and reconnect with yourself. The first half involves active, rhythmic breathing to activate the sympathetic nervous system. The second half changes to a different breath technique to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Music, verbal guidance, and, at times, optional therapeutic touch help you throughout the process.

Integration & Reflection (5-30 min depending on format)

Reflect on insights from your journey, ask any questions, and plan how to incorporate what you have experienced or learned. If requested, Paige will explain how to utilize a shorter version of the breathwork journey that clients can complete on their own at home.

    • Pregnant women

    • Cardiovascular problems (angina, heart attack, high blood pressure)

    • Glaucoma, retinal detachment, osteoporosis

Clients with asthma should bring their inhaler and consult their physician before booking.

  • Somatic breathwork is primarily a physiological and body-based process. Instead of analyzing thoughts, it works directly with the nervous system through intentional breathing patterns. The breath influences the autonomic nervous system (the system that governs stress responses like fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.) By shifting breathing patterns, you can shift your physiological state.
